Programme description
By choosing the Biotechnology degree program, you will be introduced to the biomedical aspects of biotechnology. Our program is strongly focused on developing your research skills. The curriculum includes advanced biotechnology subjects that are based on topics in biochemistry, microbiology, and cell and molecular biology. As a student, you will have the opportunity to learn about the latest concepts and developments in medical biotechnology and gain the necessary practical skills in biomedical techniques, molecular biology and genetic engineering.
Biotechnology studies will allow you to gain practical experience in the use of commonly used and advanced scientific equipment and protocols, and to become familiar with the requirements of the bioeconomy and biotechnology regulations. As a graduate, you will be well equipped to design and implement a research project, and you will be familiar with biotechnology legislation. The degree program ends with a Master of Science in Biotechnology. Practical courses will help you develop comprehensive knowledge and skills that meet current industry and employer requirements. You will also be able to carry out independent research projects under the supervision of experienced researchers. The studies take place at our campus in Morasko, in very well equipped laboratories, but you will also have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in other research centers.
WHY STUDY MSC IN BIOTECHNOLOGY?
MSc study programme introduces students to the biomedical aspects of biotechnology. Programme consists of advanced biotechnological subjects build on basic topics in biochemistry, microbiology, as well as cell- and molecular biology. It covers the latest concepts, achievements, and methodologies of medical biotechnology. Our MSc students: develop the necessary practical skills in biomedical and molecular biology techniques, project management, get a hands-on experience with commonly used as well as sophisticated scientific instrumentation, explore the requirements of bioeconomy and biotechnological legislation. It’s a full-time two-year study, covering 60 credits per year. As this is an international master programme, all courses are taught in English and we expect our candidates to be fluent in English.
The study consists of mandatory and elective courses that comprise both theoretical knowledge and practical application of theory from experimental design to bioinformatic and statistical analysis of raw data and interpretation of results. Students will be equipped with practical skills to apply novel biotechnology and molecular biology techniques in biomedical research. They will be well prepared to design and realize research projects.
OUR ALUMNI
A Master in Biotechnology will give our alumni a solid basis for further careers, both nationally and internationally. Well-trained personnel at the MSc level are needed and are often employed by hospitals and other health services, consultancy companies, and industry, both as researchers or advisors. Graduates of the Masters programme will also be qualified for practical clinical work and technical executive positions in hospital laboratories as well as different roles in public and government institutions.
The Alumni has a broad theoretical and practical knowledge of biotechnological methods, which enables:
- targeted modification of microorganisms, cells of higher organisms and whole organisms;
- conduct biosynthesis and biotransformation processes;
- isolate and purify bioproducts and determine their biological and physicochemical properties;
- design macromolecules characterized by the desired activity and be able to develop conditions for biotechnological processes, conduct their optimization and control;
- design and characterize proteins and peptides, use recombinant DNA techniques to construct genetically modified organisms; search online databases related to bioinformatics and molecular biology.
ADVANTAGES OF OUR PROGRAMME
- During your studies you will be given the opportunity to work in research teams focused on biomedical aspects of biotechnology and molecular biology, participate in research projects funded nationally and internationally and even to write and run your own research project!
- You will have access to up-to-date scientific research infrastructure and well equipped laboratories
- You will be functioning in interdisciplinary scientific environment
- Many of our research teams are international, so you will practice your scientific English skills at everyday manner.
Career prospects
Alumni are well prepared for work broad range of institutions:
- at universities and scientific institutes,
- to continue education within PhD programmes,
- in biological and biotechnological laboratories (analytics, diagnostics),
- in R&D companies from biotechnology, pharmacy and biochemistry fields,
- knowledge from studies will help to start own biotechnology company.
Specializations within the program
There is no formal specialization in the field of study, but a wide range of optional subjects allows students to focus on selected aspects of biotechnology:
- animal and human development,
- human disease and therapy,
- applied medical biotechnology.
